Our School

Naumai Haere Mai.

Te Mata School is an incredible school to be apart. We believe that we are one big learning family.  Together we celebrate, support and encourage each other to "Seek the Heights" in all that we do.  We strive to set children up with a love of learning, create years of treasured memories and provide our children with a strong foundation across the curriculum for future success. We want our children to be confident and have a place where they can shine as individuals.

Our School Values lay the foundation of our relationships, learning, success and growth for all here at Te Mata School.  They are

  • Tuakiritanga/Belonging - I understand who I am and where I belong.
  • Manaakitanga/Respect - We care for people and place.
  • Whakapuāwai/Personal Excellence - We flourish ever forward.
  • Auahatanga/Creativity and Innovation - We think, create and innovate.

Our staff are friendly, approachable and highly experienced.  They work hard to support and extend children's learning through diverse programmes that are based on current research, best practice and innovative ideas.  Their numerous strengths in life and across the curriculum means that learning is exciting and there are a wide variety of sporting, EOTC, arts, leadership, S.T.E.A.M and cultural opportunities for our children to take part in or enjoy.  We have fun with our children and families.

Our children come to school excited about the day ahead and take an active role in shaping their learning with the teaching team. Across the school you will see our children from Year 0 to 6 playing, supporting and learning together.  Our school student leaders play a vital role in our school and we value their voice and active contribution to our school.  During school events you will hear our house chants and cheering in full volume, as they encourage others to do their best and give new opportunities a go.

Our school is supported by our parents and whānau who are vital partners in setting our children up for personal success.  We encourage our families to get involved and enjoy all the different activities in the daily life of our school.  Our Home and School team are always looking for new people to get involved who are prepared to share their talents and a little time. Our Board of Trustees utilise their strengths to ensure that we are always focussed on providing a high standard of pastoral care, learning and opportunities for our children and families within our schoo community.

Te Mata School has a student roll which begins each year with around 530 students and ends the year with approximately 600 students.  We have an enrolment scheme that ensures we are able to maintain class numbers that set learners up for success.  We pride ourselves on being a big school with a family feel, where everyone knows each other, is valued and is there to enjoy life and learning together. This starts in the morning with our leaders being outside welcoming children and their families, with music playing in the background that chidlren often stop and dance or sing to.

As a school we are situated in Havelock North which  is known locally as "The Village". It has retained its "Village" character and strong sense of community while growing and becoming part of the wider district of Hastings and province of Hawke's Bay.  Our local business and cultural community play an active role in supporting our school and enriching the learning of our children across the curriculum.  They also value and seek our children's voice and involvement in their decisions and community events.

Te Mata School continues to be known as a high quality school that stands out for personal excellence with a big heart for children and families.

Come and see it in action!
