Te Mata School - A Place Where Your Child Will Thrive
At Te Mata School, our children are at the heart of everything we do, and we want them to thrive and succeed as well-rounded individuals and learners. We achieve this by fostering a welcoming, future-focused school known for our ‘Seeking the Heights’ culture—where learning is exciting, engaging, collaborative, and meaningful. Our learning programmes are based on best practice and research, delivered by highly skilled teachers who are dedicated to ensuring every child reaches their full potential. Whether in academics, sports, culture, or the arts, we nurture curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning.
We believe every child should feel happy, supported, and inspired to do their personal best. One of our school values is Whakapuāwai which means to ever flourish forward, striving for personal growth and success . Our caring environment encourages children to aim high, embrace challenges, and develop a strong sense of self-belief as a person and as a learner.
At Te Mata School, we believe that children thrive when they are active participants in their learning, and supported by a strong partnership between home and school. Our teachers build meaningful relationships with learners and their families, fostering open communication and a team approach to learning.
We value the unique insights that children bring to their own learning and the deep understanding parents/whānau have of their child. By working together, we design learning experiences that support and challenge each child to reach their full potential. Our school provides a warm, safe, and inclusive environment where every child is valued, supported, challenged and celebrated for their achievements and individuality.
We empower our learners to take increasing ownership of their learning by developing their confidence, independence, essential life and learning skills:
Articulate learners – Understanding what they are learning, why it matters, and what success looks like.
Active learners – Learners are involved in learning and making decisions in their learning. Over time they learn how to take increaseing responsibility for their learning eg: setting goals, reflecting on their progress, learning from others and celebrating their successes.
Growth Mindset – Learning is a process. It takes time, practice and at times making and learning from mistakes. We teach our children how to overcome challenges and develop a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Through encouragement, reflection, and support, our learners develop the skills they need to succeed now and in the future. Come in and see our learners in action in class!
Just like our learners our teachers strive to "Seek the Heights". We learn from leading experts in education to ensure we are at the cutting edge of learning. In 2024 our ERO review team stated
“The teaching here is of a high standard. It is purposeful and meaningful. It’s no wonder your students are making progress! The extensive professional development your staff has undertaken has clearly placed you ahead of the curve, especially with the new curriculum on its way. The results of this work will continue to help your school go from strength-to-strength for your teachers and your learners in the future.”
We provide high-quality learning through Structured Literacy and Structured Mathematics, ensuring every child progresses at their own pace in a well-planned, systematic and supportive way. Our approach builds strong foundations in reading, writing, and maths, giving children a solid foundation and the confidence to tackle new challenges for the future.
At Te Mata School, we focus on more than just academics—we develop well-rounded learners who are prepared for life. During your child's time at Te Mata we will build essential skills such as:
Thinking critically & solving problems – Asking questions and finding solutions.
Communicating & collaborating – Expressing ideas and working well with others.
Being resilient & adaptable – Learning to cope with change and challenges.
Growing a positive mindset – Seeing mistakes as opportunities to learn.
Managing themselves – Becoming responsible and independent learners.
Being creative & innovative – Thinking outside the box and exploring new ideas.
We give children the confidence to take on the world, fostering curiosity, leadership, and a sense of responsibility. Our goal is to develop learners who not only achieve academically but also grow into kind, capable individuals who contribute positively to their communities.
At Te Mata School, we believe in every child’s potential.
We’d love to welcome your family into our school community,
where every learner is supported to thrive, ‘Seek the Heights’ and shine.

Extra-Curricular Learning Opportunities
Our Vision statement of ‘Seek the Heights’: Growing confident and capable kids who seek their heights now and in the future is our schools commitment to providing Te Mata School children with a range of opportunities to develop skills across the whole curriculum. As well as providing these skills through our learning programmes, we offer the following extracurricular options.
Sports
We provide a range of sporting opportunities for all ages. This includes our school wide events: Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming Sports. There are also opportunities to represent Te Mata School in local sports competitions, such as Orienteering, Hockey, Miniball, Cricket, Tennis, Touch, Netball, Weetbix Tri and Rippa Rugby. Check out our Sport page on the Te Mata website for more information on these opportunities.
Cultural/Arts
At Te Mata we take pride in providing a range of cultural opportunities for our children to experience and grow. These groups are an important part of the “special character” of our place. Our children enjoy the opportunity to be part of Kapa Haka, Syndicate Choirs and Dance Festivals.
Music Tuition
Children in the Senior School have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument in a small group. Tutor fees and instrument hire are met by parents. More information can be found on our website.
Leadership
At Te Mata School we believe that all children have the qualities and attributes to be leaders and as a result, we offer a range of leadership opportunities such as House Captains, flag monitors, librarians, School Councillors and LIMs (Leaders of the Middle School) to name a few.
Support for Children
All children in New Zealand have the right to access education and it is the role of the school to ensure that educational opportunities are equitable and meet the needs of the individual child.
We aim to meet the needs of children who require additional support using an inclusive, holistic and team approach. The team consists of the child, the whanau, the school and when required outside agencies.
Children with Special Abilities
Throughout the year the school offers special programmes to children who have been identified as having a special ability. These programmes give our students the opportunity to shine and further master their gifts.
